A few tricks to fill-up one's backpack :
  • A few tricks to fill-up one's backpack :
  • Put first the voluminous and light gear such as the sleeping bag, the down jacket,…At this 1 st stage, it is important to fill the bottom of your pack as well as possible.
  • Put the heavy stuff next to your back and in the middle of your pack (crampons, rope, food, helmet,…)
  • You will end up with the light gear that you will probably need during the day, therefore keep them at the top of your pack (fleece, gloves, hat,…)
  • Avoid hanging gear outside the pack (except your skis or ice axe, of course) : you will loose them….or you will make a lot of noise !
PERSONAL CLOTHING
1 Gore-Tex ® (or breathable shell clothing) jacket and pants or bib
1 pair of gaiters
2 lightweight thermal tops & thighs (polypropylene or capilene ® )
1 lightweight fleece shirt
1 fleece jacket
1 pair of warm ski gloves and a shell over-mitt
1 spare pair of lightweight spring gloves or wool liners
1 warm hat or balaclava
1 cap or any hat to protect your face from the sun
3 pairs of non cotton socks

 

PERSONAL GEAR

1 pair of glacier sunglasses
1 pack of 30 – 40l (3500-5000 c.i.)
1 warm synthetic filled sleeping bag (10°F)
1 pair of mountaineering plastic boots. Make certain your crampons work on them !
1 pair of crampons w/ anti- balling plates
1 harness w/ 1 locking carabiners
1 non technical ice axe
1 headlamp w/ a new battery (the Tikka â Petzl one is extremely light and efficient enough)
1 pair of telescopic poles to help distribute the weight of your pack better and take the weight off your legs and back
1 goggle

 

MISCELLANEOUS

Small compact camera
Personal first aid kit (second skin, aspirin, toilet articles)
Sun block and lip cream
Water bottle 1 liter minimum with insulated cover.
Passport and cash

 

ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT LIST FOR HIGH SUMMITS (Aconcagua and Mount Pissis)

1 pair of down mitten or shell for your gloves.
1 down filled sleeping bag (–25°F).
1 down jacket.
1 pair of winter mountaineering plastic boots.
